This morning - I'm eating it right now, in fact - I made breakfast of scrambled eggs, mushrooms, and cherry tomatoes, with salt, pepper, cilantro, and nutritional yeast. And every couple of bites, I swear, it tastes just like roasted chicken.
I am intrigued by this, and the wikipedia entry only helped so much. is it just like salt? what's the calorie content? is it like vegemite which i totally miss from my Australian days? shall i invest in some? lots of questions. also, that canned fake meat is super weird.
I first heard about it in vegan recipes like this. I haven't made that recipe, but I was intrigued by the "use it like parmesan cheese" thing. It's not really cheesy - it's got a sort of darker taste, savory. I think it's actually an example of umami. I mostly sprinkle it on eggs, but I think it'd be good in tomato sauce or soup, or, as the wikipedia I think says, on popcorn (though I don't know if it'd stick). If you hate mushrooms you might hate it - that umami thing again. It's also obscenely full of B vitamins, which are usually lacking in vegetarian diets. I've never tasted vegemite, so I don't know about that. But they sell vegemite (or marmite) at Whole Foods.
