If two years is enough to make a tradition, then one of my favorite traditions is the Battery Park River to River concert on July 4th. The past two years have featured two of my absolute favorite bands - Belle & Sebastian and The New Pornographers - and even with last year's rain (both years' rain?) it makes for a truly wonderful afternoon. The tickets are free; the park is beautiful; the bands, again, have been two of my favoritest; and there are enough port-a-potties that the line moves quickly. I can't think of a better way to spend that afternoon, and you still have enough time to get anywhere else to see the fireworks. (The fact that they are not well seen from Battery Park was a lesson we learned that first year. And I doubt we'll be worrying about the intricacies of navigating the East 60th St. pier any time soon ever again.) So I can't think of a better way to spend that afternoon, but I may have to. I knew this streak would be hard to keep up - What bands could ever meet the high bar of favoriteness while still being appropriate for the occasion? The Decemberists? The Shins? Okay, that would've been awesome. - and so my July 4th afternoon has probably freed up with the announcement: Sonic Youth & The Feelies are playing Battery Park July 4th. I'm sure this is amazing for some people, but I meet it with a resounding meh.
